If you want to score a band score 7 in your IELTS Speaking exam, remember, you have to use some less common idiomatic expressions.

We all know the idiom ‘it’s raining cats and dogs’ because this is a common idiom. But what are some less common idioms?

This podcast will give you 3 idioms for you to learn, which you can use in your IELTS Speaking exam.

Remember in my previous podcast I suggested some ideas for preparing your part 2.

In part 2 you have 1 minute to prepare. In my previous podcast I said you it would be a good idea to use this time to think not only about synonyms and paraphrasing, but also about idioms.

So, let’s not waste any more time, and learn some idioms you can use in your IELTS Speaking exam part 2.

Let’s imagine you have to talk for 2 minutes about a piece of art you like, for example, a painting, or a photograph. You could use the idiom ‘itchy feet’. If you have got itchy feet it means you have a desire to travel. So, you could start your talk like this:

I would like to tell you about the Mona Lisa. Last year, me and my mum both had itchy feet, so we decided to go to Paris. While we were there, we went to The Louvre museum, and saw the Mona Lisa.

This idiom, itchy feet, can also be used if you have to talk about a trip you took, or a vacation you went on.

Next, let’s imagine you have to talk about your daily routine. What idiom could you use? Perhaps you could use ‘burn the candle at both ends.’ If you burn the candle at both ends it means you stay up late and get up early. So, for example, you could start your part 2 talk like this:

I’m going to tell you about my daily routine. Firstly, I’d like to say I am a student and I have a part time job in the local supermarket, so I get up really early to go to work and I stay up very late to study. I burn the candle at both ends. So, let me tell you how my day goes…

A third idiom you could use is ‘get my ducks in a row.’ If you have to get your ducks in a row it means you need to organize your tasks. So, perhaps you could use this idiom while talking about your daily routine as well. For example, I spend each evening between 9 and 10 getting my ducks in a row for the next day to make sure I have everything organised and I am ready and well-prepared.

These are 3 idioms you could use in your IELTS speaking exam to help you get a band score 7.
