Improve your PARAPHRASING

IELTS Speaking: Paraphrasing

Say it differently. Say it better.

Paraphrasing is one of the most useful skills you can develop for IELTS Speaking.

In the Speaking test, you will often need to respond to questions using your own language rather than simply repeating the words used by the examiner. Being able to paraphrase helps you demonstrate a wider vocabulary and gives you more flexibility when developing your answers.

What I teach

In my IELTS Speaking lessons, I show you how to:

– Recognise key words and ideas in an examiner’s question
– Express the same idea using different vocabulary
– Use synonyms naturally rather than forcing them into your answers
– Change word forms and grammatical structures
– Avoid unnecessary repetition
– Paraphrase questions in Parts 1, 2 and 3
– Develop answers using your own language

Why does paraphrasing matter?

Strong candidates don’t simply memorise lists of alternative words. They can adapt their language to the question and communicate their ideas naturally.

For students aiming for Band 6.5 or 7, this flexibility can help demonstrate a stronger range of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

In the lesson:

We practise paraphrasing using realistic IELTS Speaking questions. I’ll listen to your answers, identify opportunities to improve your language and show you how to express your ideas more flexibly.

The goal isn’t to sound complicated. It’s to sound natural, accurate and flexible.
