Improve your CONNECTIVES

IELTS Speaking: Connectives & Spoken Discourse Markers

Make your ideas easier to follow.

Good IELTS Speaking answers aren’t just about vocabulary and grammar. You also need to connect your ideas clearly.

Spoken discourse markers and connectives can help you organise your thoughts, introduce examples, contrast ideas, explain reasons and move naturally from one point to another.

What I teach

We work with language for:

– Adding ideas
– Giving reasons
– Giving examples
– Contrasting opinions
– Explaining consequences
– Clarifying what you mean
– Sequencing ideas
– Introducing a different perspective
– Concluding an answer

We also look at the difference between written connectives and natural spoken discourse markers.

Why does this matter?

IELTS Speaking assesses Fluency & Coherence. You need to show that you can communicate your ideas clearly and connect them effectively.

But using lots of connectives doesn’t automatically make an answer better.

Overusing expressions such as firstly, moreover, furthermore can make your speaking sound more like an essay than a conversation.

My lessons focus on natural spoken English — language that helps you organise your thoughts without making your answers sound memorised.

In the lesson

We’ll practise using discourse markers in realistic IELTS Speaking questions, particularly Parts 2 and 3.

I’ll help you develop answers that have a clear structure while still sounding natural, spontaneous and conversational.

The goal is simple: make your ideas easier to follow without making your English sound rehearsed.
